There is an opinion that the institution of the family became obsolete recently, and to that a large number of stains, unwillingness of young people to enter official marriage and so forth serves as the evidence. But, nevertheless, people continue to be paired and give birth to children. Means, families after all continue to be started. Just the concept of family not absolutely meets now old expectations of what it has to be.

Functions of family

The modern sociology defines family as the small group created by people for performance of certain functions:

- birth and education of children;

- maintaining general economy, mutual economic support of family members; - development of spiritual and moral qualities of family members, regulation of their behavior in the relation to each other;

- mutually development and enrichment of interests of family members, organization of joint pastime; - rendering psychological and moral assistance and support; - providing certain social status and creation of conditions for performance of social roles of spouses, parents, children.

Tipologization of the family relations

It is accepted to allocate such forms of marriage as monogamous and polygamous. The monogamous family is understood as the union of one man and one woman. The polygamous form of matrimony is subdivided into such types as

- group marriage in which at once several men and women are in the matrimonial relations (officially remained on the Marquesas Islands); - a poliandriya or multicourage (now meets on Tibet and in some areas in the south of India); - a poliginiya or polygamy (officially exists in the Muslim countries). On structure of family relations of family are subdivided into nuclear, consisting of the parents and their children living together with them, and expanded, including in themselves representatives more than two generations. Depending on the one which of spouses is a leader in family matrimonies can be divided into patriarchal in which the man, on matriarchal in which the leading position belongs to the woman, and on democratic or egalitarian predominates. In the last spouses on equal terms make the decisions concerning performance and division of family functions.

Informal forms of marriage

Except officially recognized forms of the family relations there are also nonconventional types of families recently. They have no status which is officially recognized by the state, but, nevertheless, exist and meet not so seldom: - guest marriage when the spouses consisting in officially registered marriage do not live in common, do not conduct the general economy and have the divided income; - the trial marriage extended in most cases among young people when partners decide to live together some time to make sure that they really suit one another; - concubinage or long-term communication of officially married man and unmarried woman who can have from it officially recognized children and get material and other support; - open marriage at which partners recognize one after another the right to have illegitimate relations and also to independently define own life priorities regardless of how belongs to it the partner.
